Plan the proportion
A practical guide to measuring your space, comparing fixtures and preparing for installation.
There is no single fixture size that works for every room. Ceiling height, furniture, sightlines and the direction of light all matter. Use the checklist below to compare options, then confirm mounting and electrical requirements with a qualified installer.
Start with a measured plan
| Measure | Record |
|---|---|
| Room | Length, width, ceiling height and any sloping or stepped ceilings. |
| Furniture | Dining table or island length and width; bed, sofa or side-table height. |
| Fixture | Shade dimensions, canopy size, weight and the full installed drop. |
| Clearances | Doors, cabinets, walkways, headboards, artwork and adjacent lights. |
| Connection | Existing junction-box location, mounting surface and access for wiring. |
Use paper, cardboard or painter’s tape to mark a proposed shade width. For a suspended light, a temporary string can help you judge the drop. Check the view from more than one position in the room.
Consider the room and the activity
Dining & kitchen
Relate the full arrangement to the table or island. Preserve conversation sightlines and working space; consider the spacing between multiple pendants.
Living & reading
Combine general illumination with a focused source beside a chair. Check shade height and glare from the seated position.
Bedroom
Measure the mattress, bedside table and headboard together. A wall light’s arm projection and switch position are important for everyday use.
Hallway & entry
Prioritize comfortable circulation and door clearance. Confirm the overall drop and whether the mounting surface can support the fixture.
Choose the light as well as the object
Shade material changes the effect: an opaque shade directs light, while translucent paper, glass or stone can create a softer ambient glow. Check whether the product uses replaceable bulbs or an integrated LED, and compare the stated color temperature and dimming details.
Bulb shape and size can affect fit and appearance. A dimmable bulb alone does not make every fixture and dimmer combination compatible. Confirm the complete system before ordering.
Confirm installation requirements
Hardwired fixtures should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local requirements. Your installer should check the electrical supply, grounding, load, mounting hardware and structural support. Do not rely on decorative plasterboard or an existing box without confirming its suitability.
A sloped ceiling, unusually heavy fixture or very long suspension may require a different mounting arrangement. Bathroom, damp and outdoor locations require appropriate ratings stated for the individual fixture.
Before you order
- Confirm the exact size and finish variant.
- Compare total installed dimensions, not only the shade.
- Check the voltage, light source, dimming and location rating.
- Confirm whether bulbs and installation accessories are included.
- Discuss uncertain mounting or wiring details with your installer.
- Check product lead time and shipping estimates against your project schedule.
