Materials & Finishes

A closer look

Texture, translucency and finish are part of the way a light meets a room.

Materials influence both appearance and illumination. The guidance below helps you compare common characteristics; always use the material description and care instructions for the specific product you choose.

01

Natural stone & alabaster

Alabaster can transmit light through its natural veining, creating a distinctive glow. Marble and travertine are often selected for their surface pattern, texture and weight. Not all stone shades transmit light in the same way; thickness, construction and the light source change the effect.

Color, veins, pores and mineral marks can vary from piece to piece. A photograph is a useful reference, but cannot show every natural variation. If consistency across a set matters, discuss this before ordering.

02

Paper shades

Paper shades create a light, sculptural presence. Their appearance can change between daylight and the warm glow of an illuminated bulb. Folds, fibers and construction details contribute to the surface character.

Keep paper dry and avoid pressure on the shade. Check the recommended light source and maximum wattage; do not substitute a hotter bulb or allow a bulb to touch the shade.

03

Glass & diffused light

Clear glass can reveal the bulb and create reflections, while opal or textured glass can soften or scatter the light. With transparent shades, consider the bulb’s shape, brightness and position in your normal sightline.

Small differences in surface appearance may occur depending on the making and finishing process. Ask about a specific shade if you require close-up detail or need to match an existing piece.

04

Metal finishes

A brushed finish, a polished surface and a painted coating respond differently to light. Warm and cool finishes can also appear different alongside timber, stone, wall paint and daylight.

A finish name describes appearance, not necessarily the base material. Refer to the product listing to identify the stated construction and finish. Avoid abrasive polishing unless the supplied instructions explicitly recommend it.

Compare samples and references carefully

Consider What to check
Lighting conditions View references in both daylight and your intended room lighting.
Natural variation Ask which differences are expected in stone, wood, paper or handmade components.
Coordinated fixtures Discuss finish consistency and product batches before placing a multi-item order.
Care Match the cleaning method to the surface and construction.
Custom finish Confirm feasibility, reference, price and timing in writing.
